A natural sweetener, stevia is derived from a plant in the sunflower family that is native to Central and South America. There its sweetness is legendary and has earned the plant the nickname sugarleaf. It is now widely used in many countries across the world, including Japan, where the traditional chemical sweetener, aspartame, is banned. It can be added to a wide variety of baking and beverage recipes, as well as to protein shakes to make them that little bit more palatable!
