Ecklonia cava is an edible marine species of brown seaweed found in the ocean off Japan and Korea. Ecklonia cava contains an impressive number of polyphenol antioxidants, a form of antioxidant found in other healthy foods like green tea, dark-hued berries, and red wine.
However, brown seaweed stands out from the rest because it contains a type of polyphenol called phlorotannins that are as much as 100 times more powerful than other kinds of polyphenols. Antioxidants scavenge free radicals from the body and prevent or reduce the damage caused by oxidation.
